IWDP PARTICIPATES ON WATER DAY
on 22nd march 2011, IWDP participated on the world water and sanitation day which took place in Kibiito sub county, Kabarole district. The function was organized by UNICEF, HEWASA and other NGOs in the region. The district woman councilor for Kabarole Miss Amina Kaija introduced the occasion and explained to the audience the day’s theme. She explained that people should know the importance of water, personal hygiene and that people should keep their water sources clean. The first speech was made by mr. Bagamba Alozio the chairperson lc3. On his remarks, he thanked the health staff, chiefs, CDO s, health workers and town clerk for arranging the function and for sensitization of people on proper sanitation. He added that Kibiito being a new town council is working hard to come to a certain level to compete with older towns and has 87% kitchen coverage, 70% bathrooms, 70% racks. He however said that water is not stored well in the region since some of the pipes are cut. Under the Fort portal diocese, the HEWASA representative who represents all the water and sanitation in the diocese made it clear that their duty is to support the government programs on water and sanitation and those they only follow the government programs. He however said that they face challenges such as lack of water sources and therefore there is a need to construct such sources another challenge is that the committees responsible for these water sources may not be functioning therefore the local government should make a follow up on these committees. According to the lc5 chairman elect, Mr. Rwabuhinga Richard, hygiene and sanitation had to be kept up in all the towns and villages not only in Kibiito. He appealed that people should keep food for sustainability and not sells everything since there is a predicted drought. Before the function closed, prizes were given to those who have been observing hygiene and sanitation in the region and this was to motivate everyone to be mindful of hygiene and sanitation and also to protect water sources and the water catchment areas.
